Winter Blues

By Tonya Thomas

How do you get your body moving when everything around you may be prompting you to slow
down?
Is it a struggle to get out of bed in the morning and make it to the gym?
These cold days can play a role in your productivity. The less you can get out to do. The less
you want to do. What kind of math is this? Your warm bed and that cozy blanket that once
provided comfort slowly starts pulling you in like a black hole.
Well, maybe it is just me, but 2024 started with a wintry re-mix that is wearing my body out!
No need to fear; your neighborhood counseling center is here!
It is possible that what you are experiencing is perfectly normal. You may have a case of the
“Winter Blues.” This isn’t an actual diagnosis. Studies have shown that a person’s mood can
shift for a short period of time in the winter season due to the long nights and cold days. Talk to
your therapist, medical professional, or someone you trust if you are experiencing any unique
mood changes.

Here are a few tips to shake off those winter blues:

  • Shower and get dressed
  • Clean up
  • Listen to something motivating / meditation
  • Exercise
  • Get out into nature
  • Ask for help
  • Help someone else
  • Meditate
  • Do something creative
  • Or take it easy!
